These range from hostels and hotels, to pensions (boarding houses), private rooms and even camping sites. Hotels in Oslo offer lower rates during summer weekends (mid-June to mid-August) to holders of relevant hotel passes.

Rooms in private homes can be booked through the Oslo tourist office for a small accommodation booking fee. Most houses require a minimum stay of at least two nights and rates usually exclude breakfast, often being more than half the price of standard hotels.

Many homely pensions and similar family run guesthouses lie just outside of Oslo, within quiet neighbourhoods and within easy reach of Lillevann Station. Pensions have always been a popular alternative to hotels and are very often older houses, with anything from 10 to 60 adequate guest rooms.

There are a total of four HI-affiliation hostels within Oslo and accommodation rates are cheapest for members. One of the closest is the Oslo Vandrerhjem Haraldsheim, which is situated around 4 km / 2.5 miles from the city centre and features a 24-hour reception and almost 300 beds.

This includes plenty of five-star accommodation, such as the aptly named Grand Hotel, which is amongst the oldest is the whole of Oslo, dating back to the 1870s, and regularly frequented by celebrities. Close by, the Perminalen Hotel offers an extremely high standard of lodging in the very centre of Oslo, at a surprisingly affordable price.

Business travellers often find the Clarion Oslo Airport Hotel near to Gardermoen Airport especially convenient and this upscale accommodation even features a luxury swimming pool and large playground area for children. For something different, head along the Frognerseterbanen and stay in a traditional wooden cabin at the Trollvasshytta resort, or consider camping at the Bogstad Camp and Turistsenter, next to Lake Bogstad, where the facilities are excellent.
